Dental Treatment Under Anaesthesia

In some cases, it can be difficult to carry out dental treatment when a child is awake – even with calming medication (sedation). In these situations, anaesthesia can be a safe and effective alternative.

During dental treatment under anaesthesia, the child sleeps calmly and feels no pain or discomfort. This method is well established in Sweden and especially helpful when the treatment is extensive, or when the child is very young, anxious, or has special needs.

When is anaesthesia used?

Anaesthesia may be recommended when:

  • The treatment is extensive (e.g. several teeth need care)
  • The child has a strong fear of dental visits
  • Previous treatments have been difficult to complete
  • The child has a condition that makes it hard to cooperate

The decision to use anaesthesia is always made individually, based on the child’s needs and medical background.

We review the child’s health history and consult with our experienced anaesthesiologist, who specialises in treating children.

What to expect

Before the treatment, you will be invited to a consultation where you’ll meet both the dentist and the anaesthesia team. We’ll go through the whole process together and answer any questions you may have.

To prepare for the appointment:

  • Your child should not eat anything for 6 hours before the visit
  • Water may be drunk up to 2 hours before the appointment

During the treatment, a team of professionals – including a dentist, dental nurse, anaesthesiologist, and anaesthesia nurse – will take care of your child.

After the treatment, your child will rest in our recovery room for about one hour. When they are fully awake and feeling well, you can return home.

Most children recover quickly and are back to preschool or school the next day.

Personalised guidance

You’ll receive tailored instructions during your planning visit, including everything you need to know about fasting, fluids, and what happens before, during and after the anaesthesia. Our goal is to make the experience safe and comfortable – and help reduce the risk of dental anxiety in the future.
